About Me
History: I was born in Delft, the Netherlands, spent much of my childhood in Rangoon, Burma (also called Myanmar) and attended high school in Boston, Massachusetts. By the time I went to college I had spent time living in both Paris and Rome and was fluent in French, Spanish and Italian. I moved to the Twin Cities area 20 years ago and have seen first-hand how tough it can be to get acclimated and to find friends and a community. The countries I have visited in my life include Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Israel, Italy, France, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Canada, Nepal and Denmark.
Former Career: I graduated from NYU with a BFA in Dance and performed around the country in musical theatre, stand-up comedy, cabaret, film, TV and radio. After moving to Minneapolis with my husband I taught ballet, jazz, tap, on-camera technique, vocal performance and also worked as an artist-in-residence in the Minneapolis public schools. Then I returned to school for further education.
Education: MA in Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Minnesota.
Research: Research projects have centered around community engagement work and include working with the American Indian community around managing diabetes; the Liberian community around breaking the silence around war and trauma; co-parenting with under-resourced parents in Hennepin County Family Court; the effects of a vocal arts program on middle school youth. My own research has focused on the father-daughter relationship and my dissertation involved creating the research base for a community intervention around strengthening social networks to support marriage and long-term committed relationships.
Clinical Practice: Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist; MN license #2275. I am also licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a Marriage and Family Therapist #1760.
Languages: French and English.
Teaching and Presentations: I am currently teaching Ethics and Research Methods and Statistical Techniques to Marriage and Family Therapy graduate students at Saint Mary’s University in Minneapolis. I present on Ethics, Implicit Bias, and other cultural issues locally, nationally and internationally. Feel free to contact me at kirsten@kirstenlindseal.com if you would like to discuss my coming to present for your organization.
